The 2011 London riots were the worst England has ever seen. There was substantially more damage, arrests, and violence than those seen in the 1985 demonstrations. The question is why and how these modern riots were so much bigger. The answer is social media. This new outlet has completely changed the political realm when dealing with public protests and demonstrations. The riots were 713 million times, numerous Facebook pages were made for and against, and BBM messaging with Blackberries helped to develop the huge crowds or rioters. Social media will and has changed the world.

It has been so many years since the disaster of the Titanic. This ship was supposed to be unsinkable and indestructible. Clearly, this was not the case. As I ponder this thought, I think about (as cheesy as this is) Unsinkable Ships by Kenny Cheseny. I don’t know whether this is disturbing or bringing forward social issues. I’m going to go with the latter because children in our society will be these people one day. I think Jonathan Hobin is commenting on the vulnerability and moldability of children. What they are around and how they are raised can make them villains in the world.

In 2001, the tree was damaged by someone with a chain saw who cut a 32-inch deep gash around the trunk. According to this study in Yemen, cannabis has a higher dependency rate than ecstasy, and alcohol has both a higher dependency rate and risk rate than both cannabis and ecstasy. Tobacco is almost as dangerous as alcohol and is in the same 1/3 of the chart for dependency as cocaine. Tobacco and alcohol are also completely legal in the United States and a large supporter of the economy. Think what you want, but even steroids have a lower dependency rate than alcohol and are around the same risk level. I personally find alcohol to be the most dangerous drug. Too many people, however, are addicted to alcohol and tobacco for them to be outlawed. I don’t think they should be by any means, but if they are so dangerous and can be legal, why can’t marijuana be a funding cash crop for our sketchy economy? We might as well get some tax revenue?

How incredibly true is this? However, I feel like any social media outlet including twitter and tumblr could definitely be considered a social cigarette. Our society is so addicted to the fast paced, informative, false sense of popularity that is society online. But, at the sam time, all of these media outlets are opportunities to inform the public on current issues. The only problem with that outlook is people normally use such sites for personal enjoyment in “creeping” instead of learning world issues. This is another main issue with American society today that I’ll save for another blog.
